States prepare for electrifying future with policy framework and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, Auto News, ET Auto

The electric vehicle movement in India has not seen the desired growth due to the lack of affordable long-range vehicles and insufficient public infrastructure for charging electric vehicles.

India is ready to play an important and strategic role in the world of electric mobility. Many states have policies in place for greater adoption of electric vehicles. One of the main pillars of the 2022 budget was the emphasis on clean and environmentally friendly public transport in India. The Indian government is supporting the electric vehicle industry through programs such as FAME-I and FAME-II, with a focus on charging infrastructure.

To discuss future infrastructure readiness and electric vehicle challenges, ETGovernment hosted a special session on smart transportation and electric vehicles with policy makers and leaders from the transport and mobility sector.

Maharashtra is one of many states offering lucrative incentives. While making a strong plea for battery electric vehicles and better public electric vehicle charging infrastructure, Ashish Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Transport and Ports, Government of Maharashtra, said, “Our policy on electric vehicles (EV) aims to bring at least 1,46,000 new battery-electric vehicles on the roads by 2025. Kerala is one of the pioneer states when it comes to the adoption of electric vehicles. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a new battery swapping policy for electric vehicles in the 2022 Union Budget. EESL is setting up 20 charging stations in Chhattisgarh. Electric vehicles will be adopted rapidly as technology evolves. »

Coupling EV charging with low-cost renewable energy systems can go a long way to improving the economics of EV and RE adoption. Manu Srivastava, Chief Secretary, Government of Madhya Pradesh, said: “The adoption of electric vehicles has been much better in the two- and three-wheeler segment than in the four-wheeler segment. Government has a major role to play in demand aggregation. To make it viable, we need to reduce the cost of electricity. Electricity regulators should have lower electricity cost for electric vehicle charging. A separate fare class would be required. Charging infrastructure on the outskirts of the city would be necessary for large transport operators operating large fleets. If the solar capacity is oversized, the energy storage could be used to charge electric vehicles,” Srivastava suggested to promote electric vehicles with low-cost renewable energy for an electrified future.

In India, the availability of charging infrastructure is not proportional to the spread of electric vehicles. Despite full-throttle plans to prepare for the future of electric mobility, India continues to struggle with a limited charging ecosystem across the country.
